I inform the parents about the potential and the limitations of therapy. My preliminary explanations, perhaps over the telephone, are designed to promote clarity and to create an atmosphere of trust. When arranging the first appointment, I already make an effort, together with the parents, to find a time that will disrupt the child’s normal daily routine as little as possible. This is so the child does not become a “special case” but can continue to attend school, play soccer, and so on. The mother and father are invited to be present for their child’s craniosacral session. Depending on the child’s age and desires, it will also be permitted to bring a favorite doll, book, or CD along to the session.
In each case I inform the parents that the initial session is designed first and foremost as an exercise in familiarization and building trust, to allow me to gain a first impression—not all parents understand the concept of evaluating the overall situation—and that I will touch the child only if it allows me to. If more is possible, then it is welcome, but the voluntary nature of participation in all areas is paramount. I mention the fact that as well as Craniosacral Therapy, I will use play-based elements to support the child—or if the parents want, I may perhaps start the session by briefly treating the mother or father; it often happens that parental release also has a positive effect on the child so that afterward it too wants to be touched and treated. I also provide information about the approximate length of the session (in my practice about fifty to sixty minutes) and about costs and methods of payment.
I suggest that after the initial session, or some days later, we discuss what will happen next, and depending on the child’s age, I request that the child be involved in the decision-making process. I also point out to the parents that improvement or cure is an entirely individual process, and that although a body of empirical data has been accumulated, it is not possible to offer a prognosis in any specific case. The total duration of treatment is highly individual, as is the number of sessions required and the interval between them. I explain that I will be in a better position to estimate this after I have had some experience with the young client, because I will then be able to form a clearer picture of the overall situation and know how the child has reacted after two or three craniosacral sessions. Another source of variation is whether symptoms disappear for only a brief time or resolve completely. This is further dependent on severity and on any previous falls or surgical procedures that may perhaps already have been forgotten. If parents ask how long it will take to eliminate the problem or symptom, I might ask them what they believe to be the cause of the problem, thus actively involving them in finding a solution.
